Atheists: Was there a First Cause? Is there a reason for the Big Bang?

Theists: Did God just decide to make everything? Why? If He is perfect, doesn't that suggest that He did not need/want anything?

((I hope nobody is offended by my questions, I am honestly seeking truth.))

There is no "first cause," nor reason for the Big Bang. There is no "reason" for anything that happens in our universe -- things happen because of reactions between matter and energy, and in accordance with natural laws.

Your question actually does a very good job of pointing out what is really the BIGGEST difference between religious people and those who accept the evidence showing no god of any kind...

Religious people seem to always assume there is indeed a reason for something. You'll see the comments here all the time: "I know god exists, because I saw a beautiful sunset and that just couldn't happen without a reason!" or "God put us here on earth for a reason!"

Those of us that accept the evidence that there is no god don't need reasons for everything that happens. We know that if there's enough hydrogen gas in a large volume of space, and it gets gravitationally purturbed, it will start condensing and eventually form a star. Planets form in the matter pulled into the protoplanetary disc around the star, and once the star begins fusing hydrogen into helium and any of the planets have atmospheres, you're going to get sunsets. Any dust or particulate matter in a nitrogen and oxygen atmosphere, along with a little water vapor, makes the sunsets look red along the horizon. Throw in some clouds to be differentially lit by the sun as you turn away from the sun in your planet's rotation, and you get a beautiful sunset. It's physics, not the will of god. There are beautiful sunsets on Mars, Jupiter, Saturn (and other planets), with nobody there to see them -- not because god made a beautiful sunset for anyone to see, but the same physics that give us ours.

There is no reason for things happening. The natural universe goes merrily on its way, doing what it does ignorant of the little beings on the small blue planet in our solar system and of their desire to find a reason for everything. The universe doesn't care about reasons...and neither do I :)
Peace.

Well in Atheist reasoning, and scientific, the universe has been nothing but matter that has always been there, and the big bang is when it first expanded, at a constant rate, and in theory, the universe will collapse upon itself again, to once again start over.
This could have happened an infinate amount of times, or this could be the first time it has happened.

It all comes down to the question of; "How did matter come out from nothing to something?" "Who created matter, (Universe, Galaxies) and How did matter came into existence?" The "Big Bang Theory" still remains a theory, and not a fact. So if any scientist can't explain this to me, I'm still sticking it out with God.

God created us because of His need to love.. All of creation comes down to just that one thing... LOVE. It's why we exist, it's want we were put here to do. To be God He needed to have a reason to love so He created the reason US.... Jim

Nobody knows what happened in the beginning, or even if there was a beginning. The truth is that nobody knows.

What humans dont understand is complete "nothingness" doesn't exist so therefore, there has always been something(dark energy, mass, ect.) one thing lead to another, chemical reactions caused evolution. instead of a beginning, think about a circle of constant changes

I won't pretend to be in God's mind, but he envisioned us and all the beauty he created, and made it all.
When this age is over - the incredible beauty and fellowship with him will be known, a joy beyond our comprehension and his joy will complete also (says the Bible).
