As others have correctly answered Canberra is the Capital of Australia. Unlike other capital cities Canberra only has a population of around 325,000 people and is more like a major town than a capital city.

It was selected for the location of the nation's capital in 1908 as a compromise between Sydney and Melbourne and to offer a degree of protection from any invading army of the time. It is unusual among Australian cities as it is an entirely purpose-built, planned city and following an international contest Chicago Architect Walter Burley Griffin was selected. Our central man-made lake is named after him.

Here are a couple of site that will give you an insight into the city http://www.canberratourism.com.au/CA256FCD00181C0A/SubHomePage?ReadForm&cat=ATTRACTION~&1=300-Attractions~&2=~&3=~&REFUNID=E6E2C374BD55E7B2CA256FCE00099491~
