I really like American Express and use my Gold card as my primary card. While I carry discover, visa, and MasterCard in addition to Amex, I prefer to use my Amex. It is accepted at all department stores (wal-mart, home depot, best buy, etc.) all airlines, all major hotels (crowne plaze, hilton, marriott, etc.) and all major gas stations (chevron, bp, etc.) In fact the only time I have really ever had a problem with acceptance is in smaller stores like Dollar General, Local hardware stores, etc. but I rarely shop at places like that so its not a big deal for me.

Well, let's put it this way. My company (a fortune 300 company) used to use Amex for corporate travel. We switched to Master Card several years ago as travelers had so much trouble using the Amex card. Better hotels and upscale restaurants weren't a problem but we even had trouble with rental cars outside the US! And less expensive restaurants wouldn't accept it at all.

You can get buyer protection plans and cash-back bennies from any number of banks with Visa or MC. Stick with them; they're universally accepted.

Amex cards are good. They offer a lot good rate cards. Most of the business don't take is only because they charge more fee per transaction compared to visa or master.

If in Singapore, Amex is not widely accepted. Most stores dun take their cards. Heard that it's because they charge the merchants higher transaction fees. I always thought it was widely accepted in USA? :P
