Getting a cat doesn't have to cost hundereds of dollars. You can find a cheap one at the local animal shelter or Petsmart. If you really don't want to pay the only way that you're going to get a free cat is by being friends with someone who's cat just had a litter.

If you live in an apartment, and there's a pet deposit......there's no such thing as a free cat.
I got my cat for ''free'' because I volunteer with the rescue I adopted her from, BUT I had to pay a $200 pet deposit to the apartment. Then I paid a good amount for the toys, litterbox, good quality food, etc.
If you have the money to afford all that (if your roommate has to pay, then it's not your cat), look on Petfinder.com and Craigslist.org. Many people post pets looking for new homes on there. Or you can save a life, and adopt from your local shelter.

Hi
You can try ur local newspapers. Some times the newspapers have "Free to a good home" in the classifid ads (Sorry for the spelling, i hope u know what i mean). So yeah, u can try ur local papers. Also u can put a ad in the paper or let friends and family know that u r wantin' a kitten and let them know that u want a free kitten and ask if they can keep an eye out for u.

Call the vet's office. Sometimes people leave notices there advertising free or inexpensive kittens and puppies.
Check with the SPCA and the Humane Society as well. They have lots of beautiful animals who need a good home.
And before you go through with this, make sure your landlord doesn't require a huge pet deposit. That's where your hundreds of dollars will go.

If you go to a shelter, you can usually get a cat/kitten for pretty cheap/free. A friend of mine recently got a really cute black kitten from a shelter. Most shelters usually have TONS of cats. Try looking online or in your local newspaper for shelters in your area.
Also, most shelters have a suggested donation. I believe my friend payed 35 dollars (it probably depends what shelter you go to). Also, the donation usually includes most of the cat/kitten's basic shots. They also recommend local vets, give you a can of food for the first few days, and lots of info (basically a "new cat owner goodie bag." Good luck!

You won't have to pay "hundreds of dollars" to get a cat from a shelter. That's the best way to go because they have had health checks, shots, frequently been spayed or neutered. It is really a bargain and the best way to go.

You could go to an adoption center. Or you could go on the website and type something like:free cats. Then you can see tons of websites that have free cats!
