THose cars have serious problems with the head gaskets on the 3.8. There is even a factory recall on some of them for that. Also the transmissions are the reason that most Taurus and Sables get junked. They were always causing trouble. If you have a transmission that you know is leaking the odds are that it has been run low on fluid. Even "with" fluid those transmissions have a terrible reputation and are a real bear to change. I would pass this one up if it were me. Check the internet search engines for "taurus" and also for Sable transmission troubles and you will see what I mean. Also for the head troubles on the 3.8. An 88 with those few miles has been driven little and sat a lot. Both of those are conducive to electrolysis which is the main cause the head gasket failures. If it hasn't already failed it is going to do so. Add to that the 3.8 is stuffed in so tight that is hard as heck to do regular work on. My 2 cents!! :-)

Yes very doable but I would not buy it simply b/c the 3.8 have headgasket issues as stated above. That seal isnt a big deal at all but the transmissions in these cars are not very strong either. If that mileage is correct I still wouldnt do it. In my honest opinion I would stay away from it at that price. I picked up a clean 93 taurus that needed brakes for 500 bucks.

That is a pretty low price for so few miles.
I would take it to a reputable trans shop and have them look at it before I paid it in full. The way that leak sounds could be indicative of more problems than just a slight leak.
