Just an example for thought.
I had a 4 lb. toy poodle, which I had taught not to bark, except when the phone or door bell rang. Of course, strangers were an exception also. I had taught her to "snap her jaws", like biting, when she wanted food.

One day, I was eating peanuts, which she loved, but not good for her. She kept snapping at me although I refused to give her any. My late wife was in the bathroom, and my dog ran to her.

Suddenly, my wife yelled out, "What are you eating that you won't give any to her, the dog."

The dog went to her and was snapping her jaws. My wife knew what she wanted, and figured I was eating something.

Go figure!

They nuzzle our hands when they want to be petted. They sit up when they want something we have -- often they will combine this with a begging expression in their eyes. They wag their tails when happy. They bark and whine and growl and snarl and whimper. They frequently communicate with their eyes and body language, too.

One morning, the dog was trying to beg cheese tidbits from me as I was fixing food. I told her "all gone no more" and showed her empty hands. She looked me right in the eye, caught my eye and then looked deliberately at the huge hunk of cheese that was still sitting on the counter. She didn't need words to call me a liar.
