I wouldn't put the two together as they might try to establish who's the boss. This will result in pecking and stress to the birds. I have a cockatiel and suggest if you mother is going to get one for you, make sure it has been hand fed and is a young bird. I've had two cockatiels and you will have much less antics and will be able to train it easier if it will come onto your hand when you put it in the cage and not fly off when you take it out of the cage. Remember to close the doors and windows no matter what! My vet says many birds are lost by an accidental opening.

Oh people be for real... Cockatiels and parakeets have been flying in the wild for centurys, LOL. Yes you can put them in the same cage. You must put the parakeet in the cockatiels cage though. You must make sure that there are two separate dishes for food if you are feeding a seed diet. I also suggest you transfer to a pelleted diet though. This solves the conflict with the two dishes. Do NOT just feed a totally pelleted diet, birds need more then just that. They need fruit, veggies, pasta, meat, rice, beans, lentils etc, so if you don't have the time to feed it correctly, you shouldn't have a bird in the first place. The cage must be of adequate size and toys must be of the size for both birds. This can pose a problem, if you don't use common sense with what you buy. But a tiel will NOT kill a keet or vice a versa, that is a myth. You do NOT need a bird to keep another bird company either. Stop being lazy and spend time with your bird. Why would you want another bird when you don't have time to spend with one bird, why would you want twice the hassle, twice the work and twice the money? It just don't make sense to add more work and time to your problem when you don't have that to spend with one bird, why add another one to the mix!!! Think about this decision before you make another bird unhappy with the situation you already have.

cockatiels and parakeets can defenitely be together. they make great companions but sometimes a will take a little while for them to get used to each other. I have a cockatiel and a parakeet together and they love eachother although it took a while for them to get used to eachother

The cockatiel will kill the parakeet, unless they are both very young and raised together, I suggest you get another tiel' they adapt no matter what age they are
