Dogs are not known for being fussy eaters. Put it in your dog's path and he'll gobble it up, whether it be table scraps, garbage … or grass.

Dogs are primarily carnivores (meat-eaters). Although they like to eat meat, they can also survive on a well-balanced vegetarian diet: Cats, on the other hand, may die without animal protein. Like all living creatures, dogs need a combination of fats, carbohydrates, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water in a balanced diet that provides enough calories to meet their daily needs.

We're not sure why your pup likes grass, although there have been many theories offered. Primarily, dogs are descended from wild canids (wolves and foxes), which ate the entire “kill” when they hunted for food. Since they consumed many herbivores (plant-eating animals), they wound up eating a lot of plants and even berries found in the stomach and intestines of their prey. Interestingly, carnivores tend to go for the stomach and its contents first, so it's likely that dogs may eat grass because they like it and it was once part of their normal diet.

No one knows for sure. Some think it is because a dog naturally eats it if their stomach is a bit upset and it helps them throw up to relieve themselves. Others think it is something instinctual from when dogs used to kill their prey and eat the stomach content which often had grass in it.
It won't hurt them as long as the grass hasn't been treated with chemicals that are toxic to dogs.

Sometimes the food makes the stomach upset. My rat terrier sometimes grazes like an cow. Their are different ones for different problems. I wish I knew cause I would try some. Their is upset stomach, and constipation, and diarrhea. Probably others too. Most of the time if it is upset stomach then you can bet that it is the grass they upchuck in the house. With the other problem, you will see in their poop or sometimes hanging out their booby. GOD BLESS YOU! sus04mc@yahoo.com

Many animals eat grass to help with their digestion if they have an upset stomach. This also helps them vomit which usually makes them feel better.

Usually dogs eat grass when they need to clean their digestive system so they eat grass that provokes peristaltic movements in their intestines (guts), eliminating this way undesirables foreign substances in them.
