They both are great vehicles as Lexus has had the #1 reliability rating going on 12 years worldwide and Buick has the highest reliability rating for American vehicles.
I am found of both product lines, if it fits your budget go for the ES... but I don't believe you could go wrong with either one.
I do recommend you test driving them on the same day, one after the other and truly see which one fits your needs from power down to the number of cup holders.

The Lexus (and it is front wheel drive)
The Lexus will retain its value far better, the V6 has nearly as much horsepower and it has a 6 speed auto vs GM's ancient 4 speed auto in the Buick. The Lexus is far nicer inside, will be a lot more reliable, and I think it even gets better mileage.
If money is a huge factor, a loaded up Camry (essentually the same car) or even an Avalon would be pretty close to the Buick in price and are still somewhat better. The only car GM makes that is even worthy of consideration is the Cadillac CTS.

If you have money to burn go with the Lexus ES, but if you love luxury and are on a budget the Lucerne is your car. The Lucerne CXS is pretty much a Cadillac built under the Buick nameplate. Both cars are great.

40,000 car VS 30,000 car unless you fully option the Buick. Buick can have the V-8 engine Front wheel drive. Lexus is rear wheel drive something to slide you off the frozen roads. Did you think to look at the Hyundai Azzera? For my .02 buy the new Maxima by Nissan. I work for Nissan But drive a 2006 Pontiac GTO. There are plenty of great cars out there right now!

The ES 350 is just a Toyota in a tuxedo. All Lexus cars are just dressed up Toyotas. I would save my cash and go with the Toyota. Th Avalon is a nice car. I actually lke the Camry's a little better. Why pay 70K for the name.
