Assuming you mean the Rebel XT (D350) because it is in the same price range as the D50, I'd choose the Nikon D50. My choice would be based on the fact that the basic lens that comes as a kit lens with the Canon is such crap compared to the kit lens with the D50. I _DO_ recommend an upgrade lens for the Nikon, but I don't think Canon even has a match for that without going another couple hundred dollars in debt.

I like the Nikkor AF-S 18-70 f/3.5-4.5G ED DX lens for a bit more range and a lot more durability than the optically adequate 18-55 kit lens.

Go here and look at the specs side-by-side. Also read the reviews for each camera and read the owner comments.

If you are talking about the Rebel XTi (400D), then all bets are off. Buy the XTi.

the two agencies make great cameras and lenses. in case you have a pair of Canon AF lenses, it in all probability makes the main experience to adhere with Canon. people who change from Canon to Nikon and (rather much constantly those days) from Nikon to Canon are people who prefer a particular function that the different form does not have. it is often the case with professional bodies. i take advantage of a semi-professional Nikon D200, yet i'd desire to confess that on the 2nd Canon has an greater professional digital camera than Nikon does. once you evaluate the XTi to the D80, you have 2 cameras that are rather flippantly matched. the real international reward of the D80 are: * It has an greater physique (which isn't plenty an advatage... that is greater that the tiny grip on the XTi is a downside) * It has an greater viewfinder * It has a niche meter * It has an greater administration format - you do not could dive into the menu so in many instances. So rather, you pay greater desirable for a pair of issues that make the D80 a greater friendly digital camera to apply. The overall performance and photograph high quality is basically about comparable. in my view - and the comments agree - those little issues DO justify the fee distinction. One very final element, the XTi will enhance your modern lenses by making use of a factor one million.6. So your 50mm lens effectively will become an 80mm lens on the XTi, etc.

I already have Nikon lenses and stuff, so I would go for the D50.
Either is a nice camera though. I would spend some extra on a better lens, especially for the Canon.

Both are good choices. I picked the Nikon because of previous experience. I had an 35mm SLR and I had a few lenses.

Either camera will make you happy. I would go w/ the one that offers the best price.
