Question

If someone is found guilty of molesting their children 15-20 years ago but has been found to not do it anymore would you trust your child around them?

*My ex feels it's alright, as well as a lawyer and a judge. I kept my ex from taking my son (I did not stop visits) because he had moved back in with his mother who had molested him as a child. The judge found me in contempt of court because I should have know my ex's mother doesn't molest kids anymore.

Believe me, if I had a choice I wouldn't be letting him take him. At this point though, if I don't the judge pretty much made it clear he could and would make things worse for me.

There were so many excellent responses that I just couldn't chose so I am putting it to a vote. Thank you all for your opinions.

I work for Child Protective Services and have been a sex offender counselor for over 8 years now. To the best of my knowledge, I have NEVER known an offender to just quit offending. It takes a lot of treatment and counseling. You have the right to have supervised visits for your child, if your ex is living in her house. He could be charged with failure to protect if he leaves the child with his mother alone. If your state is not willing to do something for you in this matter, to protect your child you might seriously consider moving. Please, at the very least get an order for child protection against his mother. Once a molester, always a molester. Sorry dear. Protect your child at all costs. Your ex may be willing to turn a blind eye, don't you. Best wishes. Nana

Someone who sexually molests children does not stop. That has been proven time and time again. If they could stop they would not be required to register where they live.

I would never allow such a person alone with my children. The lawyer and judge are totally wrong.

Here's an idea. Contact the Oprah Winfrey Show. She is adamantly against people who sexual molest others. I'll bet they can give you some advice.

It doesn't matter if a person molested a child a 100 years ago and still has not done it again,they should not be allowed to be around children! If a person had the temptation to molest a child before who is to say that they won't have that temptation again! You should fight this,go over the judge's head,go to the DA or whoever you have to,get a lawyer. DON'T LET YOURE CHILD GO AROUND HER! good luck.

Your main job is to protect your children. Find an good lawyer, do anything to keep them away from this person. A child molester never ever deserves the benefit of doubt.

I respectfully disagree with the judge and would not allow anything other than supervised visits with the child's grandmother. While sex offenders can change, it is rare that they do. I would hire a lawyer to defend myself in this instance and obtain a guardian ad lietem for my child if necessary to protect the child. My child was abused by a cousin and we have NEVER allowed that child or any other child near him since. You will never have the problem if you do not expose the child to the risk. I believe they should know their grandmother, BUT only in a carefully supervised (by me or their mother) supervision.

I totally agree with you. People relapse all the time and why should a child suffer? You can't put your trust in man. I'm sooooo sorry you even had to make that decision. Your ex should understand how he felt as a child. I'm really sorry.

Did you have a lawyer? Because really that doen't sound like the right decision. Especially if you are allowing your ex to visit the children at other locations.
