For many cultures or religions, pre-marital sex is considered a sin. If religion isn't an issue, there are still reasons to abstain from pre-marital sex, namely disease and babies.
As long as birth control and/or condoms are used, and both partners are emotionally ready to deal with the consequences of sex, there's really nothing wrong with it. I would make sure that both people are ready for the consequences of sex in the event that both birth control (such as pill, shot, ring, patch) AND the condom fail and a child is conceived.
Many people decide to wait until marriage, or at least until engaged. Good for them. Many people also decide to experiment with sex and see what's out there. Good for them too. Sex is a highly personal choice, you have to do what is best for YOU.
EDIT/ADDITION:
I noticed many people saying that it's a sin and quoting from the bible. I would just like to remind everyone that though Christianity is your faith, it might not be the faith of everyone, including the asker. To judge someone because of a behavior/action you feel is wrong is against the very principles of Christianity. For those of you are espousing biblical quotes, please also remember to Judge Not Lest Ye Be Judged. The Yahoo community is large and diverse, with users from all parts of the globe. Please do not push your religious beliefs onto anyone else. Some people do not believe in/follow the bible, and that does not make them any less of a person - and it does not make other faiths any less valid. It would be interesting to see how others from other faiths weigh in on this topic.
Also, I think it's naive to think that just because something is supposedly a sin, that it's not going to happen. Rather than bash those that choose to have pre-marital sex, I think it's better to educate them on the risks and provide the resources/tools necessary to help them protect themselves.

I dont believe there is anything wrong with pre-marital sex, infact I would rather incourage it.....Sex place a major role in a healthy and longlasting relationship, and if things between you during sex are not right then, i am afraid it will eventually cause problems sometime between you down the track.....You need to be compatible even with sex and the only way to find out is to try before you buy, as silly as this sounds, they knew what they were talking about....
Pre-marital sex is important which ever way you want to see it....

Sex is something sacrate and should be taken or used as an game.
I dont beleive in premarital sex, since the woman's body should not be a physical pleasure to be enjoyed by any dumb guy who promises to love you...since the love they claim to feel is only the moment heat.
I think, that the man who marries a women is deserving of a pure and clean woman, and not one that has had multiple partners before,,
Just like a man's obligations are to provide, protect, and honor the wife,,,,I think the least the wife could provide for him is a pure and never touched before body.
This is only my opinion...

Have you ever had sex before? Then if you have without protection then you know that you are supseptible to all kinds of diseases, if you think you can trust your partner these days ask people who have AIDS, HIV, Genital herpes and such. These are uncurable diseases and they lead to all kinds of life frustrations and problems, stress and the like. The bible warns against it in Galatians 5: 19 warns that people who are immoral will not live with GOD in the end or in eternity. Romans13:11-13 speaks about what happens of you are sexually immoral and that if you are in Christ that you do not act this way. The bible also says that in Revelation and in almost every book in the new testament. People do not pay attention, but the scriptures are there to correct and PROTECT us and wether you are a believer or not sexual transmitted diseases will make you a believer because it is a relsult f DISOBEDIENCE to GOD. He set the rules and when we disobey we pay the consequences. Our bodies were made for sexual gratification in the marriage relationship because that is the safest place for it when people are faithful to one another. It honors GOD because when we are trustful to our partner and to Him we are saying that we honor the fact that He knows what is best for our lives. PLEASE take my word on it and if you do not read the bible start to because it has plenty of answers for daily living in this world. I know from experience. nothing as log as you don't go to far and have sex with anything that walks! You should have some kind of knowledge of who you are with and how that person feels about the relationship.
