Normal wear and tear over time can cause one of the disks in your spine to rupture (herniate) causing a bulge on one side of the disk. Exceptional strain or traumatic injury can have the same effect. Many people describe this as a "slipped" disk. Back pain results when the herniated disk pinches one of the 50 nerves that come out of the spinal cord.
The sciatic nerve, which runs from your spinal cord to your leg, is most likely to be affected. Compression or inflammation of this nerve causes sciatica — a sharp, shooting pain in the lower back, buttocks and leg.

Basically
Your spine is like a big stack of pringles. Now imagine spaghetti flowing downside parallel to the pringles. Now imagine a grape inbetween every pringle. What a herniated disc means, is that one of the grapes ruptured and a little chunk of the grape is touching the a spaghetti strand. The spaghetti strands are sensitive nerves by the way.
sorry about the cheesy comparison. Im a food person : )
plus I've had what you had and surgery etc etc etc

hernia means that something is protruding where it should not.
when the lumbar disc(s) protrude, they can casue severe low back pain becuase the disc material is compressing a nerve. They can also cause radicular (radiating) pain, tingling or numbness in the leg on the side that the disc protrudes.
Go see a doctor, to make sure it is not cancer, and if it is a herniated disc, maybe you can get relief. Also go the the ER if you lose bowel or bladder control
