I think it's important to know the difference between things that a parent can do because they're an adult as opposed to refusing to answer reasonable questions about why certain things aren't allowed. You *can* tell kids to "do as i say not as i do," but if this is the only response they ever get when asking for explanations, then this is not good parenting. They will not respect someone who treats them like that and it will not teach them the things they need to be learning to be productive adults who can make good decisions.

And sometimes you're just at the end of your rope with them and "because I said so" is all you feel like saying. But this should be the exception, not the rule.

Children don't pay a lot of attention to what parents say but they watch very closely how they see their parents live their lives. Nothing teaches better than a good example!

No, parents should set a good example for their kids. It doesn't mean that the parents can't be honest with the kids and tell them what they have done wrong in the past.

i do believe in this saying - its a way of learning - i have two teenagers and trust me - i would rather they did as i say and definately not do as i did.
