(I'm assuming that we're talking about Communion under the appearance of wine, and that we're also talking about a church which believes in the Real Presence. If either of these are untrue, kindly disregard this post.)
While it's true that you aren't required to drink a particular amount of the Precious Blood, it still maintains the "accidents" of wine, so it can still make you drunk. And of course, it also tastes like wine.
However, because the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ are present in each species - the Host and the Blood - you aren't required to take both. In my church, I'd say only 15% of people actually partake of both species. At least from a Catholic viewpoint, it's absolutely-100%-okay to abstain from the Blood if you feel you need to.

Many churches do not use alcohol any more but find out before hand. If you are a recovering alcoholic and they do serve alcohol I advise you not to take that part of communion. Even one tiny drink can do a lot of damage. Communion is a sacrament and reminds us of what Christ has done for us. Just because you dont take communion it is not a sin. Also if you do take communion make sure your heart is in the right place with God.

Well Most church in today's time take Holy Communion with grape juice. Drinking alcohol is not a sin, But a recovering alcoholic needs to be right before taking Holy Communion.
you know what I mean? Not Saturday night in the Bar and Sunday Morning taking Holy Communion. You are eating a Scarface Christ said "Do it in remembrance of me." you are braking breed with Christ I would not take noting like that lightly.
I pray that this help?

Catholics drink wine at communion but they are supposed to believe it is the ACTUAL blood of Christ so alcoholic should focus on drinking the blood not drinking the alcohol.
Baptists on the other hand drink grape juice at communion.
Offer your alcoholic the option to choose which communion service he/she wants to attend.

Even in the Cathoholic church the amount of wine you get is smaller than a tenth of a thimble. Its not like they give you a pint of the blood of Christ. At that point you would have to say that that is the best of the boujolais nouveau.

In the Catholic Church Jesus is present in both species. The Bread and the wine so not taking the precious Blood would not be a problem. (It has been changed into the Body and Blood of Jesus nayway and that could never hurt you.)

I know many who pass on the wine and many churches that use grape juice instead--many people in churches can't take the wine for medical reasons too

You can partake only in the body (host) form, and you need only a sip of his blood not the whole chalice to partake in his blood.
