Basically it is an airline revolving around a hub & spoke network, with unions, a cooporate structure.

Legacies also include First Class/Buisiness Class, lounges, Frequent Flyer Programs, alliances, and Thrills/Perks throughout the cabin (food, beverage, better service).

While mainly used in the USA (the big six:United,American,Delta,US Airways, Continental,Northwest), other exampleas include Lufthansa, British Airways, Singapore Airlines and Air Canada.

cheers

Legacy Airlines Definition

Basically it means that they are still around under the same corporate structure that founded the airline. They've not been bought out or assimilated by another airline or have been resurrected through bankruptcy with an old name but a new corporate structure underlying the name.

Legacy carrier would mean an old established airline.
Much like Chevrolet would be a "Legacy Auto maker"

In that context it means established. Ones that have been around as opposed to start ups.
