If you are planning to go for a short visit I would agree with the others stay near Sydney, the train can take you to the nearby attractions, Featherdale Park, the Blue Mountains (try the train down the mountain the steepest in the world) but if you have the opprtunity to stay a while Oz has a lot to offer, you can get great bus deals for a year open ended ticket off and on as much as you want in one direction! Also there is so much to see there is the big stuff, the Whitsundays, the great barrier reef, Kakadu National Park but there is also so much to do that is not on the beaten track.... helping sea turtles, hiking in all the different areas, work on farm as an exchange. The locals will tell you some of the better places to go. If you like bats there is a place in Wingham that has lots of them! Go and explore there is a lot to see. The more time you have the better! I want to go back and discover what I did not the first time.

As the previous person has said it is a massive country full of adventure and incredible sites to see. What are you into? Sydney is overrated and like any city in the world, though you should make a pojnt to see it just to see the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House, even Taronga Park Zoo. As per previous answerer also, Melbourne is incredible, it really is very multicultural and home to numerous events throughout the year. See link below. There are also many sites in and around both cities that are very worthwhile visiting. Adelaide is yet another beautiful city that has many sites to offer. If you are into wineries and beautiful vineyards then this is the place you need to see. Incredible views and a gorgeous city to boot.
Perth is yet another wonderful city (apparently) I've never been there my self but have good friends from there who rant and rave about just how wonderful and beautiful it is. One cannot visit Australia without touring Ayer's rock or Ularu as it is now known. The most incredible rock in the world and the olga's another wonderful place to visit. Take a hot Air balloon tour over both of them if you can, just wonderful. Then there is the amazingly touristic city of Cairns in Northern Queensland. A big holiday spot for Poms (English) on tour, but a good place to start looking at the Great Barrier Reef, make your way south through some of the cities and islands that run along the coastal shores being shore to stop in at the Sunshine Coast (my home town), Brisbane and the Gold Coast, then head into Northern New South Wales and visit Byron Bay & Lennox Heads and some of the great coastal towns there until finally reaching Sydney! Have a great time and say hi to my country for me!!!!

OK, understand that Australia isnt some midget state, its one heck of a large island, as large as the US. It has different climates north to south, at different times of the year. If you have only a week or so, stick close to Sydney, explore its beach towns, soak up the citylife. If time is no problem, grab a car (or bus pass) and head somewhere. A particularly fine trip is from Sydney to Cairns, take your time, maybe a month. Melbourne is serious chic, as multi-cultural a city as u will find anywhere. Brisbane and the coasts are laid back, with the worlds most perfecrt weather all the time. Good luck, bon voyage!
