If you shine a flashlight on the ground, and a dog starts chasing it, can it kill them? I personally don't think it can, but two of my neighbors seem to think that it can cause brain damage or a heart attack. However, I tried this out with a dog last night, and she seemed to be enjoying it. Please help!

Dogs chase almost anything that moves, its not going to kill them unless you repeatedly run them into a wall or something weird like that. Dogs like to play. Safe games like "chase" are fine.

Playing with a flashlight or laser pointer is unlikely to kill a dog but has been found to cause obsessive compulsive behavior (stereotypy) in many dogs. It is probably best not to take a chance since this disorder can make life very difficult for the dog (anxiety) and very expensive for the owner (vet bills). Here's an article telling a little about it: http://ezinearticles.com/?Are-Laser-Pointers-Safe-for-Your-Puppy-Dog?&id=292320

This will not kill your dog unless there is an underlying health problem, like heart failure. You can buy little laser lights to shine around the room for dogs and cats to chase. If your dog likes it, it can be good exercise. Have fun!!

Did you try it out to see if the dog would come up with brain damage or a heart attack?

You need to get a life!

I doubt it would kill a dog, but it can increase the likelihood of neurotic behaviors such as shadow chasing and being startled by lights. We're not talking normal shadow chasing, but the kind that keeps going until the pet is completely exhausted and still stressed out. That's probably your neighbors' concern, is that it is stressing the dog out too much.

Just use your common sense to determine whether the dog is having fun or going nuts (in a not-good way).

Think your neighbors are the ones that have brain damage,This won't hurt your pet,in fact it gives them plenty of exercise and all seem to love it.Tell your neighbors someone must have shinned a light and run them nuts.

Unless the dog runs into something I don't think it would hurt it. I play with my dog with a flashlight sometimes when I'm feeling lazy.

I don't think it can kill a dog, been doing it to my dog off and on for 10 years now and he seems to be enjoying it.

I don't think so. I mean its just like them chasing a rodent only a flashlight is much brighter. Unless they run into they run into something because of it I would think that you are fine.
