Well that's how they spelled it themselves....
Just kidding.
Ptero is a greek word that means winged, dactyl is the Greek word for lizard. The Pterodactyl had wings and was therefore a flying (or winged) lizard, hence, Pterodactyl. Why the Greeks decided to spell it with a 'p' is anybody's guess.
