Last week I made Alton Brown's "Nutty as a..." That's the name of the recipe; it's a fruitcake. I don't care for the stuff myself; it's a gift.

After baking, you are supposed to sprinkle the cake with brandy every 2 or 3 days and keep it wrapped in plastic and foil. I made it a week ago and have been sprinkling as directed, but the cake is getting pretty sticky. Am I being too liberal with the brandy or is it supposed to do that? Opinions please, from the fruitcake loving crowd.

The recipe says to wrap in plastic and doesn't mention parchment paper or letting it sit before putting it away after sprinkling.

ive been baking fruit cake for years i sprinkle the cake with 2Tablespoons of brandy every 4 days for about 20days. dont wrap the cake in plastic but rather use parchment paper/cookie dough paper and then foil. change the paper if it gets to wet. after the 20day period, rewrap the cake lightly in paper and keep in an airtight container until ready to eat.
Im sure the plastic is the reason the cakes is sticky, try my and youll see the difference

I think 'lou' should go to allrecipes.com and take a look around - before offering that site as a recommendation for every question asked. It's getting pretty obvious that 'lou' is not bothering to read the questions, merely clicking on them to get another 2 points.

Anyway (sorry), I'm answering your question because I think it's kinda cute that you don't care for fruitcake; only making it as a gift. (I don't like it, either!) I wonder if anybody really eats it - it always seems to get passed around as a gift!
I sounds like you're doing alright with it - but how long are you supposed to "sprinkle every 2 or 3 days"? If you're not sure, maybe you can find out at http://www.foodnetwork.com and look for Alton Brown's recipes?

I'm assuming that the cake is wrapped around with parchment/baking paper? Only thing I can think of is that you did not let it 'dry out' before folding the paper back for storing. I usually feed any fruitcakes and leave it out for 5-10mins before storing it away.
