Some authorites have said he killed himself after finding out that someone had taken over his throne in Persia. Others say he was killed. Please, informed answers only.

There are two versions. The Greeks including Herodotus claim he killed himself. Darius in the Behistun Inscription says he died in an accident. Since we can't cross exam the witnesses, we can only assume both sides have an advantage in their version. Since the the participants were Persians, I would have to give them a slight edge.
