if you are using Windows XP, you can experiment with typing MSCONFIG from the run line. from there, go to the services tab, hide all services that are not Microsoft services, and disable everything that is left. if this fixes it, then you can narrow down which services are causing the hang up.

Also from MSCONFIG you can go to the startup tab and disable all of the items that begin at startup, this may also help you to narrow down what the cause is.

Once you've done these two and found a suspected hangup program, either uninstall it (if not needed) or leave it un-selected as a startup program or service and see if the computer continues to hang after prolonged use.

I have this problem all the time, sometimes i find that programs i download come with a spyware program attached to them,. because they are part of the main program a spyware scan does not detect it. The best thing to do just before shutdown is press ctrl alt delete and see what programs are running. Chances are one of them will not shutdown straight away so you need to delete it from the list to bypass this problem. Hope that helps

1. Check that you haven't got zonealarm on automatic cache cleaner on start up.

2. Similarly, check that you haven't got your virus chechecker on automatic sweep at start up - including Windows Onecare.
These slow your start up time dramatically.

3. Are you wireless networked with a Belkin router? One of Belkins programs really causes problems (the program isn't needed but runs all the time - XP related and uses nearly all the resource).

If you have Belkin, press CTRL, ALT DEL to bring up task manager. The program will be something like 'winxp zerodisableconfig... ' or something - sorry but I can't remember exactly. Note down the name, shut it down, then search for it on your drive and delete it. You should then have no further problems.

it's hard to know whats going on but install windows defender
install some of the spy ware software free ones get them here
http://www.pcworld.com/downloads/file/fid,22262-order,1-page,1-c,alldownloads/description.html?findid=42052 just in cast the others missed something
make sure there is at least 15% free space left on the drive and run defrag /f a reboot maybe required

one more thing it might be check your memory is reported correctly and turn on smart for the hard drive in the bios if you have it and last get a rootkit checker and run that

it could be that the hard drive is full or nearly full

hope this helps

Working with a slow computer can be time consuming as programs/ applications take a long time to start. This problem is more pronounced in computers which have been used for 6 or more months. More information at http://fixit.in/slowcomputer.html

Hey,
In my opinion Ccleaner is the number one tool for cleaning your pc. I've been using it for more then a year now and it works very well. You can grab your free copy here http://j.mp/1sW26Qh
It's a very simple and nice software.
Cheers.

Sounds like your harddrive is on its way out.

I'd be tempted to get a new one, install windows on it and use your old one as a slave if you need to get any important files off it.

If you are not comforatble opening it up and diving in then your local computer shop will have a look at it (for a price obviously.. dunno how much these days.. £40?)
