Once you get into the real world you'll notice it becomes the opposite. Each word suddenly becomes precious. Remember, a short story is about the STORY. NOT the description. Remove every word you don't need and your story becomes thus: "I walked down the street. Some guy asked me for change but I didn't give him any. I had plenty, but didn't feel like giving it to him. He went crazy!" That's it. I shouldn't be able to do that. You have to have more story to it. Who is this crazy homeless guy? Why does it matter that hes attacking you? Maybe you knew him when you guys were in grad school? Tell me a story. Make more happen. Have action, excitement, romance. Excessive description wont get you anywhere. I know it sounds like what you should be writing. Tolkien had that style but I'm telling you to stop. If you want to say he took a pee, just say he took a pee, don't describe every action involved. I don't care about them. I care about the story.
