Good question. I happen to be a bomb dog and I can detect any explosive by my nose. After I detect it, I sit which allows my handler to know that I have located the explosive. I believe that I can defuse most bombs; however, my handler will not give me the chance. He says I have to go to another school to learn to do that. Like he knows. I do all of the work. He points, I sniff. Oh well, he gives me a nice place to stay and scratches me behind the ear. You have got to see my trophies.

The dog doesn't disfuse a bomb. The dog can smell that there really is a bomb. That why they can call in the appropriate people. Think of it. If a dog can smell the bomb and locate it in a mall, long before a human would have been able to find it with his eyes. What better way to get the people there to defuse the bomb before it goes off.

I was in Iraq, Baghdad, and i have worked with many dog handlers. The dog doesn't defuse the bomb but they do sniff them out. When a bomb dog does in fact find explosives, all the dog does is sit down.

i dont think that it means that the dog defuses the bomb, he just finds it and the police defuse it.

The dog doesn't do the defusing, but lets the handler know where the device is.
