i could imagine all these books may have a so called RFID tag in its back. thats a small chip carrying information about the book (maybe just a catalog-number) which can be read with a transceiving device.
Same technology is used in some supermarkets where they make use of this kind of technology in a way that you may not need to put all things you buy on the conveyor.
They can simply scan all the tags and make a list.
However its a fast and effective way to keep track on things.

it's how they keep people from steeling... just like in a store. When they swipe the book it de-magnetizes the security strip so that you won't set off the alarm

I believe it "de-magnetizes" it, so it won't set off the security sensor. but I could be wrong. It probably feeds data to the No Such Agency, too....

it reads the Bar Codes on the book itself so then they know who has the book and when it should be returned.
