why do people put stones on jewish headstones?

ive noticed that some of the jewish headstones in the cemetary have little pebbles on them, then i remebered the scene at the end of Schindlers List where people were lining up to put stones on his grave. what does it mean? Thank you.

Now the placing of pebbles is way to show respect and say this grave is tended and cared for. Another custom is derived from shepherds who kept count of their sheep with pebbles.
