Dear Victoria:
Yes, some of our Churches are Trinity based, and some Jesus based. The difficulty arises from Creation.
God Created in His Own Likeness - for He knew only Himself.
He is Spirit-Mind. We are part OF Him , but not Him. We, in our Ultimate Reality live within the folds of His Spirit essence which fills all space and dimension.
In non-denominational teachings I have learned that at the point of Separation, God Created the Holy Spirit, Who has never taken physical form. In His purity, He is Created as we were and like US - as we were before we arose in physical form on Earth.
His "duties" are to be our Conscience, (intuition) our Guide and our Comforter.
Jesus is a brother and was Created as we have been. As one of us, he answered the Call that the Holy Spirit put out through the entire Kingdom - for the one that would teach the Father's Nature for the Remembrance of our Identity. And, the one who would demonstrate the Reality of Soul/Spirit and our Eternal-ness. His "duty" was to Teach and jog our memories of the Father, and reflect His Nature.
All three are Created Beings as ourselves - with certain functions to perform while we are in Separation. They guarantee our ability to Return to the Creator and end the Separation.
Whether the Bible says it, or not, the Reality of our Selves is that we are OF God, but not Him. Since some doctrines espouse that God incarnated as Jesus, and the Holy Spirit is God's actual Spirit, it is a matter of splitting hairs. Since we are part OF Him and made in His Image there is something of us that is as pure and holy as He Himself. Our souls or spirit-minds. Those souls are connected to the Creator at all times - still in constant communion with Him and filled with His all Knowledge. The human Intellect blocks our awareness of this. The Great Separation has caused denial of this Knowledge through the Intellect - which always wants proof. Yet, Science can never make God a mathematical formula. Unseen, He is not locate-able nor touchable. Science comes up against Him, but cannot display Him ! Since we are as close to Him (He fills all space and dimension as Spirit essence) as to our own breath, you can see how some doctrines decided Jesus and the Holy Spirit are the same as Him. In a manner of speaking, we are also!
I believe as you - as I described above, but since I see how much a part of God we are and that the connection as One always exists (for He Created us to be One with Him), I feel tolerant toward those who have taken it one step further and declared the three are One ! Well, yes. . .yet no !
We can overlook, in peace, the hair splitting, and just know within ourselves that Jesus is one of US and the Holy Spirit was a specially Created Being for the purpose of Guidance during the Separation. Hope this has helped !!
Best regards, Lana

victoria, the bible is a most difficult place to find info. there is much that has been deleted and left out of the bible.Jesus & paul, indeed all the diciples were persicuted for Blasphemy, even as delicately as they spoke. the truth is that jesus taught "God dwells within you as you". All can have union with God within their heart in unconditional love. Read; John 10-30, 14-11, 14-20, 17-11, 17-21/23 and Ephensians 1-14, 2-22, 3-16, 3-19, 4-4/6.also jesus's teachings have there roots in the vedas, siddha yoga and hinduism. Marvin R has it right. They are connected, but not all the same. God is at the top obviously, His son, Jesus, next and the Holy Spirit is something that God bestows on people, its not a actual entity by itself, its a spiritual gift. Jesus is part of God, as His only begotten son, the holy spirit is a gift from God, but God is the top of the ladder. You see, I also do not believe that Jesus is God, He's God's son, so closer than any others, but not Him.

The disciples of Jesus knew that He was God:
John 20:28-29
28 Thomas said to him, "My Lord and my God!"
29 Then Jesus told him, "Because you have seen me, you have believed; blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
(from New International Version)
And the description in the Old Testament of the Messiah(Christ) says he would be called Mighty God, Father and Counselor(Holy Spirit):
Isa 9:6-7
6 For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given,
and the government will be on his shoulders.
And he will be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
7 Of the increase of his government and peace
there will be no end.
He will reign on David's throne
and over his kingdom,
establishing and upholding it
with justice and righteousness
from that time on and forever.
The zeal of the LORD Almighty
will accomplish this.
(from New International Version)
There is no "rational explanation" of this and we certainly don't know how there could be one God, yet three persons. But God will explain it to us when we meet Him. .

Ask your pastor to tell you why he thinks celebrating christmas is ok as well, and why he thinks that jesus was born in december when it clearly states in the bible when jesus was born. Trinity has pagan roots, just like christmas. Tell your pastor you will be relying solely on the bible for your knowledge not from him.

A book that discusses this in one of it's chapters is "Misquoting Jesus: The Story Behind Who Changed the Bible and Why". An interesting and thought provoking book by Bart D. Ehrman.
From Amazon.com:
"Though himself schooled in evangelical literalism, Ehrman has come to regard his earlier faith in the inerrant inspiration of the Bible as misguided, given that the original texts have disappeared and that the extant texts available do not agree with one another."

the trinity does not mean three gods, it means tri=three and unity=one. it means god, jesus, and the holy spirit are one. God as the father, declared himself so / god as the son speaking his word, jesus / and God as a living testament working through us today, the holy spirit.
be reminded that god is outside the confines of time and space, therefore he very well can exist as the father, son, and holy spirit in unison.

Perhaps you should ask your family this question. Ask them to show you scriptures to make them believe the way that they do. Then ask your pastor to explain to you where he is getting his belief from. Look for it in the word. Then if they do not match up to what the word says, you know it's time to find another place of worship.

There is no proof of anything, the trinity is the leasy of your worries. Ask yourself, how does this effect your life?
Keep questioning, then you will find that the whole religion is based of myth, but it still doesn't effect your life. You will then br free to live
