A chicken cant eat eough fleas to make a dent in the population. You can use carbo dust, it is safe for use on birds. If you cant get it buy a flea/mite powder but make sure that it is for bird use. You have to dust the chicken with the powder and rub into the feathers.
I cant find it on google. I dont know the ingredient but it is something available in South Africa. Totally safe.

Diatomacious earth (not sure about the spelling) is an organic powder that you can dust on your chickens. It is compeltly safe and can be dusted around the coop as well. Certain types of spot ons for cats can also be used but I have not tried them so I can't give you any further info on that. You can find the product I mentioned in some farm supply stores or on the internet.
Good Luck!

Flea and lice powder, ask arround in your area if anyone is selling it usually takes arround 24 hours to kill the fleas / lice on the bird. However you also have to clean the chicken's living area otherwise it will simply happen again.
