Since baptism can be likened to giving testimony would you buy a present for someone giving evidence in court? Very strange.

Is it quite right to be buying presents for a baptism?

I don't think the people that John the Baptist baptised were bothered about presents.

Take care that you do not detract from or compromise this important step of obedience by introducing presents and gifts. Some might think that the gifts may have an influence in the matter.

I do hope he will quit himself like a man,1 Corintians 16/13, and refuse your gift.

A good idea would be to celebrate his baptism by providing a celebration afterwards for his family and close friends. This need not be elaborate but an opportunity for those close to him to spend time with him and share testimony/thoughts etc. Some photographs could be taken and then you could present one of the best to him in a frame as a keepsake of this special day.

God Bless you and your friend - hope all goes well.

If Anglican, the old Anglican prayer book, St. Augustine's prayer book, maybe a rosary. It all depends upon the church he is in.
A study bible, as others have suggested is never a bad idea. If you know his family and friends enough to ask, why not coordinate to give him several of these.
It is probably going to be the most important day of his adult life, perhaps only marriage being the second!

The cross necklace would depend on what denomination he is being baptized in and what are his convictions about wearing that kind of religioujs symbols. Check first.
My suggestion would be a Bible. He probably already has one, but you can get (depending on how much you want to spend) a leather bound one, perhaps with study helps in it. I would suggest something froom the last century or so, so he wouldn't have too much trouble reading it. (NIV, the Message, or, a little older, New American Standard Version).

A book of prayers, inspirational sayings or any other book with spiritual thoughts in it - visit your local Christian bookshop. It doesn't have to be a Bible, he probably has one of those!

A set of cufflinks

A cross and chain (if they are the type to wear jewellery)

Just something nice and gift-ish that will remind them of their special day - it doesn't have to be religious.

I was baptised at 23 and had a Bible, a cross and chain and a pair of earrings! But I'm female . . .

Very kind of you, but it's not traditional to give gifts at Baptism for adults. I think it might make the receiver uncomfortable if you did that.

Buy him a nice study bible. The bible is the "how to" book on life for Christians.

A really nice hardcover bible is a good and appropriate gift. Something like that would become a lifelong keepsake.
