Cat was born in 1998. She has NOT been 'fixed'. Is primarily a 'house cat'. Hasn't been injured (to our knowledge). We lost a cat last year who was older (born in 1992) that had the same thinning of hair where the tail meets the body. Need to know how serious this condition could get. Thanks!

Fleas do not typically cause hair loss. Allegies can, however cause hair loss, but it will be manifested by intense itching.

The most common cause I see at work on a regular basis for this symptom is thyroid disease. Cats do well on a medication but must be tested and closely monitored. Please call your vet and they can help you properly diagnose this problem with your cat. GL

Many cats get that "condition", actually, due to hormones in the body, same as a human being gets loads of pimples during puberty. A fixed cat doesn't, at least not to the same degree. It's called "stud tail" (I think, the term is different is Swedish, of course), and treatment can be very simple. There's a thing called Groomer's Goop, which can be bought online most certainly, and probably/possible in a good pet shop nearby. If you can't find it, ask the people working in the pet shop if they have any suggestions for something that could work instead.

As for how serious it could get, she might get a bald spot there ;p So it's up to you how serious you think that is.

There could be various the clarification why it somewhat is occurring, and you may take her to the vet for an assessment. it may be so ordinary as changing her nutrients now that she is a senior cat to something with some greater oils in it, or it can be a parasite.
