No, two different breeds.
The Lab would be the better choice since they are a bit more docile and make GREAT companions for kids. The Retriever is a bit more outgoing and needs more activity and exercise to keep from getting bored. But they are both good choices.
Read up on these two in wiki:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Labrador_Retriever
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Golden_Retriever
THEN do some further Research here on the web so you can make a better and MUCH more informed decision.
BTW: You have a 3 year old child? It's been the experience of MANY that "baby" humans and baby animals are a bad mix since the baby human doesn't understand that the baby animal is ALIVE, has feelings and CAN be HURT. I humbly suggest giving a homeless adult dog a chance at life. I'm sure you can find a younger one that is just old enough to understand younger humans. http://petfinder.com is a good start as well as your local shelters and ASPCA.
GOOD LUCK!!!

They are not although I have also noticed they have many similarities. I think alot of confusion comes in because people sometimes mistake yellow labs for golden retrievers, but labs generally have short fur while Goldens have longer more flowing locks. While Labrador retrievers came from Canada, Golden Retrievers originated from Europe. The Golden Retriever was first developed in the British Isles, probably from crosses between a yellow Flat-Coated Retriever, light-coated Tweed Water Spaniels, other spaniels, setters and even the Newfoundland and possibly the Bloodhound. The Golden Retriever is one of the world's foremost family companion dogs. Many of the top obedience competition dogs in the country are Golden retrievers. Labrador Retrievers are believed to have originated on the island of Newfoundland, now part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada. They are thought to have descended from the St. John's Water Dog (no longer in existence), a crossbreed of native water dogs and the Newfoundland to which the Labrador is closely related. While Golden Labs comes only in a golden color, Labrador Retrievers can come in yellow, black, or chocolate. Both breeds are wonderful family dogs. However, Golden Retrievers as a breed are typically a bit more calm than Labrador Retrievers. Golden Retrievers tend to want to be with people all the time, and desire a lot of attention. Labs are more independent by nature. They are also very noisy about everything. Both breeds are great with kids, and both love water, although some labs may love to swim more than some goldens.

There is no such thing as a golden Labrador..there is a yellow Lab. Golden Retreivers and Labrador Retreivers are two totally seperate breeds. About the only thing they have in common is that they were both bred to retreive ducks & game birds and they both are prone to the same health issues.
It is very important if looking to buy either that you buy from a responsible breeder that does health tests (not just a simple vet exam) on the parents and can prove it, breeds for temeprament and for the breed standard.
Far too many Labs & Goldens are over bred, have bad temperaments, are hyper and have health issues.

There is not such thing as a "golden lab" unless it is a cross between a golden retriever and a Labrador.
A golden retriever is a long haired breed that has long hair on its chest and the back of it's legs and a skirt. A Labrador which comes in several colors such as yellow, black and brown has short hair all over its body. The breeds are of similar build and both are dogs which can be trained to hunt and retrieve animals for their people.
I would suggest you go on the AKC site and look up both breeds to see which one you are thinking about. Both breeds are good with kids and make great family pets when properly trained.

No, golen labrador is really a yellow lab - no such thing as a golden labrador. The golden retriever is a separate breed. Check out both breeds before buying one, there are differences.

Actually they're called yellow labs and golden retrievers, and no, they're not the same. Golden retrievers are bigger and have longer hair, and yellow labs are shorter/stockier and have shorter hair. Also wanted to add that I watch Emergency vets, sometimes, and golden retrievers are known for back problems, so I would recommend a lab.

Yellow retrievers are very different from Golden Retrievers in appearance and temperment. Goldens can be much more layed back than Yellow Retrievers but they serve the same function as a field and hunting dog. Both breeds are very prone to cancers so be careful which bloodline you choose of either group.

The Golden Labrador is not a purebred dog. It is a cross between the Golden Retriever and the Labrador Retriever.

A "Golden" Lab is usually called a "Yellow Lab" and is a Labrador Retriever. They are different from Golden Retrievers which is a whole other breed. I think you are thinking of a Yellow Lab but I am not sure.
Here are some photos of Yellow Labs:

And here are some of Golden Retrievers:

Heres what I came up with:
Golden Labs: Actually a Golden Lab is a cross between a Golden Retriever and a Labrador Retriever. The proper term is Yellow. Doesn't matter what shade of yellow, its yellow. Again, don't fall for anyone calling them Golden Labs and its recommended you don't use the term either when describing a Labrador.
Heres a site showing my search results; click a link to find good information. And enjoy your dog-- whichever you get. They give so much.
