as long as you are sure you want them!
if you are getting it just too look cool to your mates do not bother cause it is a long and fiddly path to get anything of a decent gauge!
in my circle of friends they are very common.. so anything below one inch is not really commented on here!
once you go above 10mm your ears will NOT ever heal completely - you will always have a slightly larger hole and you could end up with your ear looking like a cats anus if you take the sizes up too fast!

if you go and speak to people in piercing shops usually they will stretch your ears if you buy the jewelerry from that shop!

and if you really want to start stretching to a big size i would recommend either getting your ears pierced at 5mm in the first place (this is what i did)

or you could get a technique called "scalpel and taper" where they cut your ear and push a taper through the wound.. you can get your ears up to very large guages very quickly doing this!!!
(only ever let a professional do this - it comes with big risks if not done properly)

if you are going to do uit yourself - go slowly or you could end up with a blowout!
2mm every 4-6 weeks will probably be ok:)

You want to gauge your ears?

I have mine done. One pair to a 3 I think, the other like a 6? I dont' remember. I like them. They aren't huge, though, but if people know what they are they don't think I am a huge puss either ;) If you decide to do it do it gradually and don't go to a shop. Just buy the "horn" looking stretchers or even better keep buying plugs a half or one size up from your last. DO NOT DO IT FAST - you can tear the skin and then you really can't heal it.

As in Braces??? If your teeth are crooked, then you should. But, you can't just have spacers, you need braces after that..
