By your short description I would guess that your computer is over heating.
To better understand your problem, would you be so kind as to answer the following.
How often does this happen?
What are your computer specs?
How long after the computer is turned on, does it usualy restart?
When did you first notice this problem?
Hope this helps,

Unfortunately that's a hard question to answer. It's like coming on Yahoo! Answers and asking why my car is making a funny sound. There are lots of reasons that can cause a system to randomly shut down: 1- Bad disk data 2- Virus 3- Software malfunction 4- Damages system files 5- Etc.
I would start of suggesting you run a complete disk defrag on your computer in safe mode. Followed by Scandisc (chkdsk /f in xp / 2000). Also make sure your antivirus programs are up to date and run a full system scan. If you don't have an anti-virus solution check out www.symantec.com and use their online virus scanner.
Use programs like Spybot to check for and remove malware and adware which are very likely to cause system crashes.

Is there a noise accompanying the shutdown? It's very likely that your CPU fan is failing. If that's it, take it to a computer store and the fan is cheap to replace.

I heard there was a trojan/spyware that shuts down a computer without the user's permission, so download a good program. "spybot s&d" should help. www.downloads.com has it

It could be a number of different causes..
Try cleaning out the case: pop the cover, take it out on the rear porch and reverse a vacuum cleaner to GENTLY blow out the dust bunnies, dingleberries and whooosits that collect over time. Use a soft, clean brush to clean between the CPU heatsink fins and the vent fan blades. Check the rear of the power supply and case vents for dust buildup.
Also make sure to check for computer viruses, spyware etc etc
Could also be a power supply failure
