On a Ford product it's called FMEM (Failure Mode Effects Management) mode, which causes the vehicle to run under only a default setting. There is a reason for this. Is there something wrong with your transmission? I'm GUESSING that it has defaulted to second gear start, and hold. It could be caused by failed shift solenoids in your transmission. Other than that, I'm not aware of any other FMEM strategy on that particular vehicle. Is the O/D cancel light flashing? Take in to get it fixed.

First off; in limp mode the eng. should power the car at normal speeds. What happens is the comp is preprogramed w\ a full advance\ fuel enrich. (some bogus perf. chips are empty, putting the comp. into limp mode) so when you make it to the shop and repeirs are made, simply disconnect the battery for at least 60 seconds to reboot.

This can also be caused by overheating, where the engine will shut down cylinders to act as heat pumps to remove the excess heat(if you have a modular 4.6 or 5.4).
