Feed a good quality food of 24% protein or less. Add a bit of olive oil or fish oil to the food.

Stay away from the foods with a lot of cheap fillers such as Science Diet, IAMS/Eukanuba, Pedigree, Purina Dog Chow.

There is no reason for a Dane to have dry flakey skin or excess shedding. If fed a proper diet they should have minimal shedding twice a year and nice soft, shiney hair and healthy skin.

OH! So that's what's going on! I wondered what all those giant fleas were and all the tall yellow grass. And the ground was sorta' pink and then a wind would come up and whoosh! I'd find myself fluttering in the breeze and landing on concrete. Over and over, like the twilight zone. Weird. So I've been living the life of a flake on the back of a great dane. Who knew? Maybe if I used more lotion I could quit flaking from him, eh? I'll try harder not to do that anymore.

I'm assuming you mean it's skin is flaky? Bathing twice a month with a mild shampoo and hydrating cream rinse helps. Adding extra Omega 3 oil to it's food works well.
This could also be a fungal thing as well so if you are concerned see a vet for a skin scraping test.
If you live in a cold climate we all dry out in the winter so some times just misting it's coat with water can improve the condition of the skin.

Even though they are short haired dogs it really helps both their skin and their coat to get good brush outs several times a week.

I have had Danes and they do shed and flake a lot. Constant brushing will help a lot, so will a shed rake, looks like a saw blade with handles.

Another thing that works is to take a wet wash cloth and rub him down from head to toe. Taking away the dander that you couldn't brush out. You can add a little of your favorite 'smell good' to the wash cloth and get a fresh smelling dog

Take him/her to one of the dog grooming places that allow you to do your own dog. They have a power dryer that will blow out the under coat.

Regular brushing, and a bath once every month or so.

I assume you are talking about his skin.

There are special oatmeal based shampoos available from your vet. I would not recommend getting a shampoo from the pet store. They are not always what they say they are and alot of them are very high in alkaline products. (This means they can make the problem worse...they tend to dry out the skin) Most vets will sell you shampoo over the counter so I recommend going to the vet to get a special shampoo. They can help you decide which one is best for your dog's skin condition. GL

I have two great danes and I have the same problem. I use head and shoulders on them. It takes away the dandruff and they smell good.

If he has dry skin and coat, giving him a salmon oil capsule daily will make a tremendous difference, particularly in the dry winter weather.
