An English or Journalism degree would be useful, but experience counts for a lot too. You shouldn't expect to become editor without first working your way up the ladder, and that will take 5-10 years as a minimum. Think about starting on your local newspaper where you will get a great grounding in journalism and get to cover lots of stories. From there, you can move into magazines and work your way up. Good luck.
