During the trip down to my husbands parents house, we were stuck in a 3 hour traffic jam. The twins were asleep for about 45 minutes of it, but as soon as they woke up, they said they needed to go to the bathroom. Long story short, they held it for the whole time. When the tears started rolling, I tried to get them to go by the side of the car, but they got too embarassed. Thankfully, we got them to a bathroom right after getting out of traffic.

Yes, and rather than have a child go through the pain of holding it in, I improvised. Any container will do - even a plastic bag. If there are food containers in the car, empty one or two and use the container (obviously to be discarded later). There is always a shirt or something to cover while "the deed" is being done to alleviate embarrassment if necessary. In short, do whatever is necessary to prevent any suffering on the child's part.

When ever I go on a ride that I know there is a possibility that we might get stuck for my son I bring an empty plastic bottle and he goes in there and then we bottle it and throw it away and the next stop. For my girl I bring a bed pan I know it sound gross but when she's done just open the door and dump it and use some water to rinse it out . I hope it helps a little bit.

I'm impatient so I think I'd get out of my car and walk if I was in a long traffic jam lol I don't live near any big cities so I'm rarely in any bad traffic jams

Though I don't have children, I'm grown and got stuck in a similar situation several years ago. We were on our way home from Arkadelphia Ar. or on the way to it, I don't recall, it was 11:00 PM. and, at the time, there were no stations open at that time of night between there and Pine Bluff, Ar. EEE GHAD! I thought I would die before we found something. Mother and I swore that on future trips we would take buckets, if we had to...too bad, sometimes, that the Good Lord didn't make us all the same way in the genital department if you know what I mean!

Yeah - Mine is almost 5 now and I still have a cheap potty in the trunk. Much easier than trying to get them to go on the side of the road without one, and much less likely to have a 'down the leg' accident too.

Using a container in the car? That is one of the nastiest things I have ever heard! How is a kid supposed to learn control if you let em just go in a container in the car. Disgusting.

well if you are going to make long trips, I would suggest you bring a potty with you, that's what I do, so we don't have to worry about finding a restroom when they need to go bad

We carried a portable potty with us... mine wouldn't "go" on the side of the road either.
