Memphis Mayor Willie Herenton, who ended his career as an amateur boxer 40 years ago, is training to go up against Joe Frazier. Herenton and Frazier square off on Thursday at the Peabody Hotel in a three-round benefit match for the Shelby County Drug Court. The mayor, now 66, won his first championship at the age of 14. But even at his height, he was never in Frazier's league, so he had to sign a waiver that absolves the former heavyweight champion from responsibility for any damage. "He's been hit by the hardest hitters in the world, so I don't think I'll do much damage," Herenton told the Memphis Commercial Appeal. But Herenton is taking the bout seriously. He has been training for several weeks with the manager of the police boxing gym and has cut down on desserts and wine. Frazier used his left hook against greats like Buster Mathis and Muhammad Ali. Herenton plans to keep his own best move a secret. "I know what he has, but he doesn't know what I have," he said.

What's up my Brother? No matter what Herenton brings to this bout, it won't be enough. The very last thing to go on a fighter is his punch. He can walk on his heels, he can talk with slurred speech and he might not be able to remember what day of the week it is, but believe me he can still punch. Nobody puts Ali on his seat that can not punch yesterday or 40 years ago, whatever they can punch.

Legendary fighter, Packy McFarland was retired from boxing for over thirty years he and his wife were walking home from St Pats Church in Joliet, Illinois when they were approached by three young men demanding money, Packy went into his wallet and gave them everything he had, but that wasn't enough the young men demanded his wife's wedding ring. Packy said "Boys, you picked the wrong bull today." and cleaned the street with the three of them breaking ones jaw and knocking the other two out until the Police arrived.

Joe is looking at the bout as a exhibition of sorts and if Willie thinks he's going to rough house old Joe, then Willie is in for a rude awakening and when he wakes up, I'm sure every one will tell him "How well he tried"

Thanks for the question Ric, it's great to have you back.

If it went rounds Frazier would have the edge, but I think there's a strong possibility that Tyson could score a 1st or 2nd round KO. Tyson in his prime came out blazing early and Frazier was a notoriously slow starter who got hit a lot. It has the recipe for an early round KO. Styles make fights and this would be a bad style matchup for Joe.

First of all, I really doubt that these guys are treating this like a Heavyweight Title Bout. I'm thinking probably some good ol' fashion Old School sparring match, which were even interesting back then. But "Go Joe! Knock the Mayor out!"

If Rocky could go back to boxing at an old age, so too Frazier who's a former world champ.

Joe was one of the hardest hitters in the fight game I hope neither of them get hurt. Its a 3 rounder I know the Dr will keep a close eye on both men. Its probably for charity but wow.

Im sure it will be just a token exibition fight and I dont think anyone will get hurt. They will probably use everblast 20oz gloves which are heavily padded.

Maybe he doesn't realize "Rocky" is just a movie. Maybe he has the frame of mind that "If Rocky can do it, so can I!"

LOL!
