The actual surgery doesn't hurt at all. It may feel like you have a piece of sand in your eye for a couple of days afterwards.

I am a LASIK tech. and assist in surgeries on a weekly basis. (Some of the info in some of the answers here are a bit, shall we say, off.) To my knowledge, you are not offered IV medications, and there is no part of your eye "cut off" That being said...you are typically in the laser room for about 20 minutes. The procedure should be about 7 minutes per eye, with about 6 minutes of that preparing the surface for treatment then smoothing the corneal flap back down. Actual laser time can range from about 15-60 seconds. They do use a device to keep the eye held open, then flood the eye with a numbing drop, typically Proparacaine. Then the flap is created, during this your vision will go completely dark and you will feel some pressure and vibrations, but no pain. After the flap is created, the Dr. will lift the flap and apply the laser treatment. After the laser reshapes the cornea, the flap is replace and smoothed back down. Healing begins almost instantly. Just before they remove the device holding your eye open a bunch of drops will be put in. Our center recommends sleeping for at least 4 hours post surgery. When you leave, you will see better than you would before surgery without your glasses on, but it will be blurry like you are opening your eyes under water. I think it is an amazing procedure and wish you the best of luck with it!

i had it done about 5 months ago, and never regretted it. You get into the operating room and sit on a funky lookin chair with this strange device around you. The doctor leans you back, and when he begins the surgery this is how the process goes: using some sort of eye clamp, the doctor keeps your eyelids from closing (definetly the most awkward part, but you get used to it really quick), and moves the laser device over your eye and lines it up to prepare surgery. I never really noticed the actual laser cutting the piece of the eye off that was needed, but it is very strange because you are awake the entire time. It does not hurt at all during the surgery, but after, you are forced to wear these funny glasses, and your eyes are very very sensitive. After about 3 days everything cleared up and i was slowly being able to see 20/20. In a week or so life was better, 2 weeks i was perfect and there were no side affects. If you have eyesight troubles i highly recommend it, it was the best purchase of my life to date!

I had lasik surgery 3 yrs ago. It did not hurt at all. You will have to take a nap for a while after the surgery because your eyes will need the rest. The procedure takes about 6 minutes total for both eyes. I had mono vision done so i have 20-20 vision with one eye and I use the other one for reading. I don't wear glasses now at all. I wore them from 7 years old until i was 46, I am so glad I had this surgery, it's the best money I ever spent! Hope this helps

I work at a LASIK center and have also had it done (a little over 2 years ago). It doesn't hurt - you may feel a little pressure on the eyes though which is not at all intolerable. During the operation, it just looks like you're looking under water (blurry) and there will be a burning smell (just the laser reshaping the cornea). The operation is only about 20-30 seconds per eye. Your eye will be held opened by a speculum (it will still feel like you're blinking). The pain you feel afterwards may be like having an eyelash in your eye and possible tearing and burning (like when cutting onions).
Good luck! It was well worth it, worth every penny! Just like a miracle!

I'm a RN and the surgery doesn't hurt and only takes about 15 minutes. The eye is given numerous eye drops including a local anesthetic by eye drops , antibiotic drops, etc. The patient is also given some medications by I.V. injection which completely relaxes the person and yet they are still awake but feeling no pain literally and figuratively. Some people may take a tylenol later but most don't require anything for pain. The surgery is definitely worth it.
