Found pitbull pup on side of road, about 6 wks. old, underweight, but otherwise he appears healthy. Should I get him vaccinated and neutered immediately, or wait till he gains some weight? Plus, he sleeps all day and parties all night, how can I get him on a more normal routine?

Take him to get examined by your Vet and started on his first shots. Rabies comes later. The Vet will tell you what schedule he needs to be on for shots and be sure to follow that carefully. Keep your puppy indoors and in your yard and short walks where other dogs don't frequent to help prevent Parvo at least until he completes his first sets of shots. Your Vet won't give your puppy shots if he is too young or ill. Also get him wormed.
Use a crate to train your dog. Put him in it at night. He will likely fuss at first but become accustomed to it with time. If he barks a lot or whines a lot you can put a sheet over the kennel cab which will make him feel more secure and less apt to whine or bark. He will eventually get used to sleeping at night but puppies sleep a lot in the day time too.
Have fun. You are in for a real experience of raising a very smart and fun dog.
You can put a chew toy, like a "Goliath" bone, a "Kong" with a few puppy biscuits in it or a Nylabone, a large one, in the crate with the dog. The Kong especially may distract him long enough to not be focused on the fact that he is in the crate and not with you.
Training a puppy takes lot of work, but I have a Pit Mix, mostly Pit, who trained very quickly.
As for neutering, tell the Vet you want to get him neutered and go by his recommendations.

I would take him to the vet to get him checked out. You want to make sure you have a healthy puppy. And for neutering, it is best to wait till they are about 6 months old, 6 weeks is Way too young. And for vaccines, if he IS healthy, they will probably vaccinate him now, but if they find something wrong, then they might wait until he is healthy again.
And i have never owned a puppy, so i don't know how to get them on the right schedule. But maybe try playing with him a lot during the day, and waking him up after a short nap, so he is more tired at night. It will probably take a while though. Anyways, good luck with the new puppy! I love pit bulls, they make Great Pets!!

You should take him to a vet as soon as possible to get evaluated!
My niece and her boyfriend found a litter of pits (3 pups one hit by a car at the scene and died) and took them home. Within days they were all showing signs of parvo and they had to take them in and have them put to sleep.
Most vets will not neuter until they are approximately 6 months but there are a few that will neuter as early as 6 to 12 weeks. I would wait on that. It is not as important as making sure he is healthy.
As far as the sleeping problem is concerned...play with him as much as possible during the day and don't let him sleep so much then he will be tired at night and want to sleep instead of party. It takes a while for them to get used to being alone after being in a litter and with mom.
Good Luck!

Yes take him to the vet for an examine and shots. One other thing, never play agressively with this puppy or any puppy. It teaches them to jump and bite. As you know pit bull bites can be very disfiguring and can cause deaths in children and adults. They are good dogs as long as you do not teach them it is okay to play rough. Never leave alone with children either. Wake him after letting him sleep, since he does need rest, but try taking him out and walking him around at night to get him tired. Throw a ball and let him chase after it. He needs a little exercise to make him tired before bed. Put something warm in his bed like a hot water bottle to snuggle.

I do not understand the thumbs down, this is what our vet told us about our pit.

You don't NEED a puppy. WHY do you want either of these breeds? Are you experienced? I would NOT recommend a Pit Bull to someone like you, particularly in Virginia.

First, at that age, are you sure it is a pitbull? Most people cannot correctly identify one... I would say take him to the vet. He will help you out, and congratulations, you have just become the proud parent of one of the most Loyal, loving dogs out there!

Did you know, that the original use of the "Pit Bull" (after bull baiting) was to track down and kill *rats*? They're better at it than cats.

if your going to keep him, take him to a vet ASAP. the bvet will tell you exactly what you should do. Be very careful and know your countys laws. there are some countys that do not allow pitbulls.
