Personally, I"m not "preoccupied"... curious is more like it. But in general, maybe it could be because so many "believers" as you put it, have made an issue with the fact that there are non-believers? I mean, if Pagans were constantly telling you that our religion(s) are better, would you not look into it? Or ignore the stated beliefs and attack the Pagan? I'm sure each individual has their own reason for what they do to others in any given religion. It's much like what has happened in the past... Look at how you got your image of Satan... every single one is an ancient image of a Pagan God/Goddess or some demi-god(dess). Yet, there is no reason at all to give this Satan an image as one is not expressed in the Bible. Why attack something like that when they didn't believe in it? *wink*

We're not "preoccupied" with anything of the sort. We ask qestions unto Believers because God, the Bible, and all that stuff doesn't make sense to us or ring to us as being "true" for the same reasons that Believers ask unto us questions about (to name a few) where we get our morals/ethics (which have othing to do with religion), how we could possibly love anybody or anything other than ourselves without accepting the lord aka the "source of love", and what we're going to do when Judgement Day comes. Because we want a better understanding of something we just don't get. You don't get us, we don't get you, and we all want to sort out our individual confusion. "Preoccupied"? No. "Closet Believers"? Not me. (I can't/won't speak for anyone else on that). How about "As curious, confounded, or frustrated as you"? Yeah, I think that's more accurate.

The same reason people are concerned about the nature of Islamic fundamentalism in the Middle East: they see the danger of these fundamentalist belief systems and then see the adherents as a target. And people are actually attacking the IMAGES of god that are not real -- the projections of people's ego thought systems that are made into 'god'. The real god is hidden under all this. If fundamentalism in the U.S. didn't compromise science and education (evolution), medicine (stem cell research), human rights (gay rights), and democracy (theocratic agendas), then things would be different. But instead, people have these negative thoughts, make them part of God's teachings, and then blindly use them to cause suffering.

If you wonder why I spend my time in debate with people who believe it is because they control the laws. I live in the south. I cannot get a beer on Sunday, I can't buy some gin at my store. Why? I can't do these things because of peoples believes in their god. God is wonderful for people who need a compass. But that is not my moral guidance. I have other guidelines for my moral decisions. So I do not want this God to influence how I live my life. And it does by laws that are written based on what is in the bible.

I believe in Jupitor and Zues, and Sun-gods of ancient Egyptians and Mayans, Native American Animal Gods, as well as the God who represents the Christians, Jews and Moslems. I believe that Gods of all religions are be based on self 'truth' and they should all be respected as they strive to answer the fundemental questions that we all yearn to be answered. Where did we come from? Where are we going? Why are we here? I believe in your God for you and My God for me.
Ones belief in God is developed from ones environment. Where one wishes to extend their belief depends on how far the mind is allowed and willing to wander, whether God is a deity in the form of an animal in the jungle, a white bearded old man in the outer atmosphere or a mathematical equation from the cosmos. Basically they are all the same God searching for the same Truth and that all paths lead to one inevitable Truth.

Because the god concept is always rammed down their throats. People have learned that the religions try to hide the 100 million who have been killed for God. And, the news media won't report on this holocaust , helping it to continue. Remember the 9/11 hijackers who said, "We're doing this for God", and God never came down and said, "Oh no you're not".

I really don't think they are closet believers. I think they are truly fascinated by how others can believe in something that to them, seems so obviously false. I am fascinated by cults. But I am certainly not a closet cult member! I am just truly fascinated by how people can come to believe in cults. I'm interested in the human psychology of it. It's just fascinating.

I'm a believer in God, but I really do think that perhaps the non-believers are fascinated with our belief in God, for what they see as a psychological phenomenon.

Also, it could be that they have had a bad experience with those who believed in God. Perhaps they grew up in fear of hell or something like that, and they really want to rid the world of fanatic beliefs which they have come to believe are harmful.

Because... ONCE AGAIN...

It has nothing to do with your god and everything to do with the religions followers trying to force their beliefs on those who don't believe.

If you're not doing that, then what are you doing when you try to ban gay marriage, ban abortion, and force through prayer and the teaching of Intelligent Design?

Come on now... you know exactly why non Christians (stop using non believers. It implies that non-christians don't believe in anything and that's not true) fight so hard.
