I have a chihuahua that I breed, I was just wondering if there is a specific number of times she should be bred. She has no problems with her pregnancy or labor. She has been bred most of the time she is in heat, sometimes I have skipped a heat to give her a break. Thanks Brenda

A Chihuahua should never have more than 4 litters..( I used to breed Chihuahuas) The AKC Parent Club membership requires no more than 3 litters.

First to answer your question a responsible breeder doesn't normally start until at least 2 yrs old and stops around 6 yrs. Then will bred every other year or so. So you are looking at her having puppies 3-4 times in her life. Anything other than that IS TOO much, IF and I say IF she is a perfect example of the bred and has lots of champions in her line. Otherwise once is too much.
Some back yard breeders, hobby breeders, or puppymillers will breed "most of the time she is in heat." Which shows you don't love your dog very much and put a price on her life, regardless of how much you say you love her!
From the Chihuahua Club website
TO breed only A.K.C. registered Chihuahuas (does not apply to foreign members) with the aim of maintaining or improving qualities of the breed as set forth in the standard, and not for personal gain. I will not participate in the buying or selling of dogs at auctions and I will never knowingly sell puppies to wholesalers, laboratories or to pet stores, and will encourage any puppy buyer to behave similarly.

TO keep myself informed in the areas of dog health and genetics and to carefully screen all breeding stock for hereditary faults or disqualifying defects, removing any questionable animals from my breeding program.

TO conduct all my kennel practices in a clear, honorable and open fashion, and use written agreements or contracts whenever possible.

There is absolutely no excuse for breeding any dog, no matter how good a producer, more than 3 times. Unless you're a puppy mill, of course. They also breed them until they're bodies can't take any more, then they're garbage!

Most breeders "retire" their breeding females at about 5-6yrs old.

Please skip every other heat, if possible...they really need the break, and don't need to be a breeding machine.

you shouldn;t breed a dog too many times, and even though breeding while in heat is fine, too many time can be fatal. In my opinon you should only breed 3 times, and about a year to a year and a half apart.

I used to breed dogs and was told by a vet that you should give the dog a break once in awhile. Maybe breed twice a year, then skip a year.

Once every other year is more than enough to keep from wearing her out.
How would you like being pregnant for most of your life?Women who have one child after another tend to develope health issues and so do dogs.
You've used and abused her enough.Get her spayed immediately.

skipping a heat cycle is best, it gives the dog time to heal and get back into shape.

Can she retire? I would hate to think that life is just about being pregnant. I say--to give her a break- to just be a dog! Good Luck!

There is no limit, but you have to wait at least a year after you breed again
