I usually wear my hair straight, but sometimes I want to go curly. I use the Garnier Fructis Hard Curl Gel and the Curl Shaping Spray Gel. They are about 3 dollars each and smell great. After I get out of the shower I brush my hair out to avoid knots. Then, depending on how much hair you have, (mine's an inch from my butt so I use about two quarter size worth), I put the gel in my palms, rub them together and flip my head over, then messy up my hair. I also scrunch it to bring in more curl. Then, I get the spray gel and scrunch and spray my hair. My hair dryer has a diffuser attachment and so then I scrunch and dry my hair with the diffuser. Not all of the way dry, but mostly. Sometimes I miss a spot with the gel and will spray more of the spray gel on. Surprisingly, it doesn't leave your hair frizzy, and doesn't take all that long. Good luck!

When I wore my hair natural/curly, I used Biolage Elixir by Matrix. You should be able to get this at any upscale hair salon.
I liked it because it took the frizzyness out of my hair, it wasn't sticky or greasy, and did not cake up in my hair. It was also easy to wash out. It shouldn't cost more than $10.

A good volumizing tonic I use is bumble and bumble. It gives you those beachy waves.
