Yes,and he become a Buddha.His teaching saves beings from suffering.His family was well provide for when he left;I want to leave as well,but cannot because I still have not provide enough for my family.

Leaving a family is not a good thing to do but leaving everything which becomes an obstacle to the heavenly light is surely not a bad thing to do.

Since they were wealthy, I doubt that he left his family with want. I'm sure they were upset, but I think he did what he had to do.
