Honey, the main thing to do is go where there are catfish, if that's what they want. Where will they go? What will they fish for? Where do they have a place to fish? What is in that water?
Ask at a bait shop in the area. But don't buy there off the bat. Just get some info.
Me , I like a cane pole with a bobber, and crickets, worms or dough balls. But I don't care if the bream eat my bait off the hook. The main thing about fishing is the time spent doing something together. Also, the feeling of bringing home something for the family to eat.
That doesn't always happen.
Don't go whole hog on expensive stuff. The thing is for them to do things together. That includes deciding for themselves what they need. You can't really do this for them. What do you do best? This is where you can chip in. Be ready to cook fish if they bring any home. And corn bread or hushpuppies.

That's a very thoughtful gift. I'm going to be totally honest with you. I'm also a fisherman. Your fiance, he's been fishing his whole life. He has his way of doing it and uses a certain kind of equipment. Certain bait. Certain hooks. A hand picked pole. All the goodies. There's no way you're going to pick out exactly what he likes. So here's my suggestion.
Maybe buy him fishing related items like a tackle box. An ice chest to put fish in. A fishing hat. A fishing knife. I'd stay away from any of the actual equipment used to catch the fish. Here's a good idea. A fishing license. You can buy a gift certificate to Kmart or Walmart or any sporting goods store. Merry Christmas you.

Go to the store and buy them a rod and reel that comes together. Don't get an open face, or a bait casting reel, because he won't know how to use it, especially if he hasn't fished since he was 5 years old. If they are just going to be fishing for catfish, get a tackle box, a stringer, some hooks, sinkers, swivels, and possibly some bobbers. The person who answered above me said to get lures to use for catfish, and you don't use lures to catch catfish. It's been done, but that's usually just a fluke.

Good equipment is very important but more important is catching something when fishing with a child. Fish for whatever you can catch, maybe perch or bream. The main thing is to catch something to a kid, they have such short attention spans they will get board and want to throw stuff in the water if their not catching anything.

Not sure, but go to a local sporting goods store, or fishing store. They would have all the info you need.
You probably need rods/lines that could support the weight of catfish, as well as lures designed for catfish.

Your best bet is to go somewhere like Gander Mountain or Sportsman's warehouse or Cabella's and ask one of the workers what to buy. I know all 3 sell inexpensive kits that have the pole, reel and pretty much everything you need to start off fishing but you may have to buy catfish specific lures.

well if there going after catfish your in luck. catfish are not picky eaters. ive caught them with a bobber, sinker, hook, and canned corn curnells. i know i know its funny but it works. the point is you can put just about anything on the end of the line, put it on the bottom and if there is a cat fish around he'll bite.
hope that helps

Just go with a zebco 33 rod and reel combo. They are not real expensive and some hooks, weights, and corks for starts.
