As the others before me have correctly answered, you DO NOT have to buy your fluids at the dealership. DOT3 is an industry standard grade that all brake fluids have to meet. DOT is an abbreviation for Department Of Transportation. That is the part of government that sets the industry standards for a number of products on the market for cars. Tires is another common product with DOT specifications. Look on the side of your tires and if the DOT number is turned out it will be a number assigned to that particular tire. And should you ever run into a situation where there may be a DOT4 or a DOT5 in later years, then that will still be compatible for your vehicle. Each number means that it is upgraded to a higher specification. Take oil for example. Some people were concerned at one time that the higher grades such as SJ, SH, etc, wouldn't work for their cars that took SD or even SE. Thereagain, it is just upgraded or better versions of the same product. So bottom line is go to the automotive section of your favorite department store if you don't want to make a special trip to the parts store and get your brake fluid while you are there buying your toothpaste and dog food. It will just be another item on your list to pick up while you are there!
