New York State or New York City and if New York City do you need to live in Manhattan or can you take the subway from Brooklyn, Queens or God forbid the Bronx. What is your ethnic background because that will determine a lot where you want to live or what you pay. Best case scenario is that you have Russian descent and want to live in Queens you can get a 1 bedroom for yourself for under $1400 a month for a nice place even cheaper if you go for something less nice and smaller down to $700/month.
Now if you must live in Manhattan you need to live downtown to get lower prices but not as nice of neighbor hood, your looking at $2000-2500 for a small one bedroom apt and that's looking around a lot. any move towards mid town or toward the parks and you add thousand of dollars per month to your rent. if you have more questions email me.

As of March 2006, New York is now the 10th most expensive city in the world tied with Oslo, Norway. But it is the #1 most expensive in North America. CNN did a study were they said an average famliy of four living on $60,000/year would have to make $146,060/year to live in Manhattan and that almost 69% of that would go toward housing costs. So if you're living comfortably in an average American town, you'd need to make 137.9% more to live comfortably in Manhattan.

It's expensive. As to how expensive? well last time I checked it was the 12th most expensive city in the world. That could've changed over the last two years. Really doubt it though.
