Like many other Answerers, I query your figures... but then
humans have been drinking alcohol since they first figured out what happened to fruit when it got over-ripe. The Mesopotanians drank beer, and the Egyptians left recipies for it.
In the middle ages, everyone -even small children- drank beer in England as it was healthier than water! (The reason for this was that drinking water was badly polluted with all sorts of nasties as we'd forgotten about sanitation... and beer is made with water that has been boiled, therefore killing off most of the bugs that made people ill or dead)
But getting drunk is something else. It is an attempt to hide. Hide from what is probably down to the individual.... however - alcohol is an inhibitor of certain brain functions... therefore we feel released when a little drunk. We can say things and do things that we wouldn't normally. Just like all those people on stage during a hypnotist's 'act' making love to mops and eating raw onions, we can put it all down to the drink.
We are told form an early age that it is relaxing. It will help us to unwind. It also lets us know that we are adults - after all if we really were still a kid (as part of us may feel) we couldn't have alcohol. It is also the reason why so many kids drink so heavily... it is true of places like brixham coz hte kids feel that there is nothing else to do... and many parents seem to just let them! But it also is a measure of how 'grown-up' they are. But it is not just in small towns - have a wander through any town or city on a Saturday night and you'll see scores of young kids smashed. And getting aggressive with it too.
Perhaps it is the curse of self-awareness that our human - highly developed - consciousness forces us to seek unconsciousness from time to time. Or maybe that's just twaddle.... but somewhat poetic if true. Anyroad up, there's a pint over the road with my name on it, and I'm off to grab it. Good luck with your search!

I'm not sure where you are getting your information, but I would doubt that 90% is accurate.
What is wrong with a glass of beer or wine? It relaxes people and there are many benefits to a reasonable amount of alcohol on a regular basis.
One of the early reasons is that people realized that those that drank beer and wine instead of water weren't getting diseased. The processes killed off bacteria that were killing off people.

agree with Sarah. Where is the 90% coming from?
I can't remember the last time I came home from work and didn't have a glass of wine but, by the same token, does that mean I'm a drunk??? - I don't think so......

To forget the daily misery and far too high stress to which we are all subjected, the alienation of being squashed in with hundreds of people we don't know twice a day, the resultant fear, the fear of getting the sack if we don't meet targets, play the game, the fear, the fear....alcohol brings a lovely warm fuzz...until the next day of course. I used to be several glasses under par, too, until my IBS (also probably the result of stress, not to mention the alcohol to try to treat it) got so bad I couldn't. I can now, thanks to a special diet and wonderful aloe vera, but I now drink to enjoy, not to forget.

People get drunk because they need a way to self medicate themselves. People also become addicted to alcohol, because they can't deal with life's problems. Then their life gets out of control. Alcohol can make people feel self confident, and people think that this is the way to go; when in reality it isn't. Alcoholism ruins lives forever.

People like to use alcohol to unwind - its the done thing in our culture. Some people 'need' to have a drink to feel normal, and this is a dangerous thing that can lead to alcoholism. I always got drunk to loose my inhibitions - I was painfully shy when sober and always felt inadequate. I don't drink now, and am working on my social phobia.

I doubt very much if it's 90%. But of those who do, I think that people just associate winding down and relaxing with alcohol. They have come to rely on it to give them a bit of a carefree attitude and escape from their worries and strife.

Its the pressure of modern life especially when working. We are not far away from the Victorian era when poor people drank vast quantities of gin just to numb the pain of everyday life. Its a dangerous road but many are on it.

some people dont know when to quit drinking and get drunk because they are alcoholics. sometimes it helps to ease the stress out of the day, if you do that constantly then you need to attend aa classes or if you need a drink or two to start your day, you need help.
