He was curious. Maybe he wanted to know if he would be welcome to join you.

he's just jealous, or protective, or curious - i mean if he is your man, and you hang out without telling him, he might be curious why and with whom. Kinda gives him some right to ask that, if he is 'your man'. :) Unless you are not exlcusive, then its really up to you to tell him what the deal is so he s with you on the same page.

Any number of reasons:
To see if one of his friends are there.
Protectively to make sure you're with a good crowd.
Making conversation.
