What would be the best dog for a boy of 9 who has been frightened by a friends large dog? Also, what kind of reading/video's can be purchased to help make this decision. We are planning on going to a shelter to rescue a dog.

I don't know if this website will help or not:
http://www.doglistener.co.uk/choosing/rescue.shtml
It's UK but the advice is still sound & applicable.

These sites might also help:

http://gooddogz.org/choosing/rescue.htm

I'd also suggest going to visit the Shelter & have a chat with them. I'm sure they will do their best to match a dog to you & your situation - after all they want the dogs in their care to go to the best possible homes. You should also get a chance to visit & see the dogs ... it might be helpful especially as they will be behind bars (as it were) & unable to get out & jump up at or frighten your boy. Though it is very likely they will bark ... but if your boy is prepared for this beforehand, then that should be okay. Then maybe you could go back as a family & discuss what you'd seen & which you liked, etc. etc. before going back to bring one home.

Do you not have a friend with an extremely friendly dog that you might be able to visit? It would help your son to realise that not all dogs are frightening. If you lived closer to me I'd invite you over to meet my Irish Setter ... not an ounce of vice, very soppy, loving & playful ... & she no longer jumps up to greet anyone when they arrive.

This website might also be useful in helping to select a breed:

Or at least indicate what mix that you'd like, if possible, in a cross breed.

Good luck

Are you looking for a small dog? If not, I have a black lab and I must say she is the friendliest, most playful and loving dog that I have ever had.....she is very obiedient and aims to please her owner in every way......you might consider a lab....if you are looking for a small dog I have no suggestions, because your son is 9, he will grow with a dog. If the dog stays little and your son gets big, he will probably not pay much attention to it when it gets older and it will be your dog at that point.

A small greyhond might be good. If you are interested go to the site below and make contact with Vicky. She is in Florida and will help you out...;

you can look at petfinder.com Shih tzus and lapso apso's are very mellow dogs. I like terriers myself, but they tend to be a bit hyper and are probably not the best choice for a kid who has some fear.
